The Offical 2013 420 Fest Post-Party Post

Phew, everyone hangin’ in there? We’re still in recovery mode from another epic weekend at 420 Fest.

_MG_0774Things might have started out dreary on Friday, but George Clinton and P-Funk had us bumpin’ in no time. If it was a blur for ya after that, we’re bringing you the highlights of what you might have missed, along with some phat photos to jog the ol’ memory.

Of course we had to bring back all the fan favorites like the KidZone, the artist market, tasty eats and the Planet 420 non-profit village. Plus, the Relapse 420 Comedy Tent was back too with more knee-slappin’, side-splittin’ comedians from all over Atlanta.

This year we tried something new with The SweetWater Experience tent, giving ya’ll a chance to sample some seriously unique brews and learn more about how beer is made, what makes it great and even some live Q&A with our Big Kahuna himself, Freddy Bensch. Hopefully you were able to sample a bunch from the lineup, because chances are you won’t see some of ‘em again.

IMG_0362Also new this year was Gas South’s charity cornhole tournament. After you guys raised a mondo $3,000 which Gas South and SweetWater matched, youth mentoring organization YES!Atlanta won the tourney and took home a fat check for $9,000! Always great to give back and help a good cause.

Last but not least, we brought out a brand spankin’ new silent disco, courtesy of Area 51. If you saw a bunch of cool cats getting’ down, but didn’t grab headphones and join in, you missed out on some super talented DJs spinning all weekend long.

Special thanks to all our outta-this-world volunteers who made the whole thing possible and to the great artists who kept the music funky all weekend long.

Oh and one more thing, 420 Fest may be how we choose to celebrate Earth Day and conservation efforts, but keepin’ Mother Earth in tip top shape is a year-round effort. Check in with some of our favorite partner organizations, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and Georgia Conservancy (just to name a couple), to see how you can give back the other 51 weekends out of the year.

Until next year…remember, “we’re here for a good time, she’s here for a long time!”

Heady Highlights and Photos: Day Two, 420 Fest

For those who weren’t too hungover from Friday’s festivities, we’re glad you rocked out ’til you clocked out with us  for Saturday’s 420 Fest party. Atlanta natives Like a Locomotive and Cadillac Jones joined our sisters and brothers from another mother including Treble Jay, Music Matters – The TAASK, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Mickey Hart Band, Anders Osborne and Maceo Parker, who rounded out the night. The blues and brews were hoppin’, and we learned you’re never too young for a cold one…popsicle, that is.

Check out some of the headiest highlights from Saturday, courtesy of Michael Podrid Photography

Get ready to go out with a bang as we officially throw down for Mother Earth today on Earth Day. Cheers to yo mama!

#WINNING – Brew Your Cask Off Champion Lineup and Photos

From the Dirty Sanchez and Little Richard Simmons, to Tebow’s Tears and Tea Bags, this year’s fest definitely wasn’t short on tasty brews…or pun-tastic names for that matter! In its 3rd year running, Brew Your Cask Off was another sell-out shindig hosting nearly 2,500 guests with more than 120 casks on tap. Most of those delicious, a few not-so-much, but one thing was for sure good times were flowin’ on tap all night long.

A quick round up of the evening’s winners for those who couldn’t make it (or had too many samples and they can’t quite remember):

1st Place – Cask #62, “Nuttin’ Butter” from Charleston Beer Exchange, a brown ale with peanut butter, peanut butter extract, raisins, Concord grape juice and lactose – a beer that is as close to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as possible.

2nd place  – Cask #11, “Fred Juice” from Fred Bar, a hoppy pale ale with citrus fruits and apricots that’s aggressively dry-hopped with Cascade and Citra.

3rd place – Cask #12, “The Chubby Chocolate Bunny” from Taco Mac, a rich porter with marshmallow notes as well as a large chocolate presence.

People’s Choice Award – Cask #22 “The Elvis Peanut Butter Banana Porter” from Cypress Street Pint and Plate, their tribute to the King, a peanut butter banana porter!

We’ve updated our Flickr with photos of the event. Make sure to check em’ out and see if you can spot yourself…your friends…or even Elvis:

Thanks for coming out to raise a glass and drink your cask off. Looking forward to celebrating again soon at 420 Fest in April!

Two chances to Brew Your Cask Off with us

It’s time to gear up for our 3rd annual “Brew Your Cask Off” festival coming up March 2012. Tickets go on sale Dec 5th and this year there are two chances for you to be a part of the brewing!

If you’ve attended this fest before, you know that we invite you to sample the creations of 80 guest brewers who typically include local restaurants, celebrities, media folks and charities. But this year, we are offering, the SweetWater faithful, the chance to brew!

Here’s how it works:

Between November 7th and November 17th we will be auctioning off the opportunity to brew on the behalf of two separate charities. The highest bidder will create a cask for the festival and every dollar raised through the auction will be donated to the nonprofit. The organizations involved in this year’s auction are Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and the Atlanta Humane Society.

Winners will be invited down to SweetWater on Sunday, February 19, 2012 to craft their cask ale. Prior to this, SweetWater’s Brewmaster Mark Medlin will work with winners to design a recipe from a plethora (yep, we said plethora) of hops, yeast, fruits, spices or whichever ingredients you have in mind. As a winning bidder, the creative license would be all yours, but Mark will be on hand to offer his expert advice and ensure your recipe makes for a tasty concoction. The ale will then remain at the brewery for three weeks during its secondary fermentation and maturation in the cask.

The final product will be showcased at the “Brew Your Cask Off” festival, which is open to ticket holders at the brewery on March 10, 2012. You will receive two “Guest Brewer” passes so that you can come out and sample your cask alongside the other entries.

Whatever your reason – to craft the tastiest ale, brew for a good cause, or score the most unique Christmas gift for a beer lover – visit SweetWater’s BYCO auction page/UCR and SweetWater’s BYCO Auction page/AHS before November 17th to place your bid.
